ISRC
Codes It also ensures royalties due to performers on that recording are also logged so that royalty payments can be may be made to those performers by Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) The codes are embedded as data into your CD single or album and are automatically read by the broadcasters' computer system when the CD is played. The codes are issued in the UK by PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) who are the UK organisation representing IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) which is the international umbrella organisation representing record companies and others around the world. You can contact PPL direct, links below, and they will issue you with codes for each individual music work on your CD Each code is made up of 12 characters for example GBZ030600212 The first two characters indicate the country of registration The third, fourth and fifth character represent the record company or organisation issuing the work. This can also be an individual The 6th and 7th character indicate the year of registration The last five characters refer to the individual registered work, from 00001 to 99999 There are two main ways of embedding codes into your master disk : 1. High Budget commercial album projects Where your mastered CD is written to DLT or other tape based carrier. You should pass the codes onto the pressing plant who are replicating your order and they will embed the codes for you during transfer of your master tape to hard drive, during the glass mastering process. There will likely be a charge for this 2. Mid budget commercial album projects Where your CD master is written to a CD-R for production. The codes can be embedded into the master CD-R audio using a programme such as Nero, embedding the codes in much the same way as you would embed CD Text. Or you can ask your pressing plant to remaster your CD-R master for you embedding the codes into a new CD-R master. Again there is likely to be a small charge for this. The codes are of little use unless you have also registered the works with PRS/MCPS and you need to fulfill certain criteria to become a member of this organisation as a writer member. Assuming you are a member however, all that is required is to register the new works along with the relevant ISRC codes and any future radio plays of one of your works will then be automatically credited to you and/or your publisher ensuring you receive any royalties due for that radio play The guide above is really only the briefest introduction to the subject To get ISRC codes issued for you or your record company contact IFPI c/o PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) 1
