Making CDs featuring music recordings owned by other record companies
If you wish to press CDs that feature music recordings owned by record companies or other individuals you have to contact these owners direct and negotiate a license to use the recording on your CD. This also applies to using a section of a recording as in a DJ Mix CD or similar. This is true irrespective of whether you propose to sell your CDs or give them away.
There is no national organisation from whom you can license this right. You have to approach the recording owners individually.
If however you have produced an original recording that features short samples taken from recordings owned by others, you can apply to get clearance of these samples through the procedures established by the mechanical copyright protection society (MCPS).
Record Companies can be extremely vigorous in exercising their rights over the use of their recordings and you should think very carefully before using such recordings without an appropriate license from the copyright owner.
It could easily end up in court.
